When I last posted I teased our trip to Skellig Michael which is an island 11 miles offshore of Southern Ireland. The island featured prominently in the most recent Star Wars films as the home/hiding place of a very whiny Luke Skywalker.

I was nervous for months about this day trip because it was hard to get, cancelled often due to weather and I get seasick. Andrew was too young to go due to the tiny boats, rough seas, and lack of anything on this rugged, former hone to some kind of monks who wanted to really be left alone. I found a brand of sea sickness meds and hoped for the best. I thought the seas were rough and wide, but fortunately this stuff worked great.

Once on the island, we were amazed. The island was one of the most rugged places I have ever been to and the monks had done amazing things with the structures their. All the buildings you saw in Star Wars were either actually here or reconstructions. Even the rock that Rey cuts in half is a real landmark.

We enjoyed quite a long time hiking around the island, looking at historic structures and learning about the island’s inhabitants. We enjoyed the most scenic picnic ever and enjoyed visiting some awesome puffins. After the visit we had a really nice ride back to shore and a lovely drive back to Killarney where Nana Carol and Andrew were waiting for us.

Next up, hopefully in less than four months, I got to see a Hairy Coo.
